What is a Self Assessment Tax Return?

Self assessment tax returns are typically filed annually by self-employed people who have income outside of the PAYE system – such as sole traders, landlords, partners in partnerships, company directors, and high earners.

These personal tax returns will include information on all types of income earned in the last tax year (from April 6th to April 5th). This may include income from:

  • Employment
  • Self-employment
  • Rental properties
  • Investments
  • …and more

The self assessment will include details of any capital gains or losses incurred during the tax year, and taxpayers can also claim deductions, allowances, and any relevant tax credits or benefits – which can help significantly reduce their final tax bill.

For more information on what information you’ll typically need to complete a personal tax return, see our checklist.

When is the deadline for self assessment?

The deadline for submitting a self assessment tax return in the UK is October 31st for paper submissions and January 31st for online submissions. Tax payments are also due by this date.

If you miss the deadline or make a mistake in the information provided, you may receive a fine or even trigger a more in-depth tax investigation. The best way to avoid this is to work with a professional accountant who can ensure your taxes are filed both accurately and on time.

Do I need to submit a Self Assessment Tax Return?

Whether you need to submit a self assessment tax return depends on your individual circumstances and sources of income.

In the UK, you must send a personal tax return if any of the following applied to you during the last tax year:

  • You were self-employed as a sole trader and earned over £1,000 after tax relief
  • You were a partner in a business partnership
  • Your total taxable income was over £100,000
  • You had to pay Capital Gains Tax when you sold something that increased in value
  • You were subject to the High Income Child Benefit Charge

You may also need to send a tax return if you have any untaxed income from other sources, including but not limited to:

    • COVID-19 grant or support payments
    • Income from renting out a property
    • Tips or commission
    • Income from savings, investments or dividends
    • Foreign income.Top of Form

If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, HMRC provide a free tool to check whether you need to submit a Self Assessment Tax Return.
