Tax is changing again. Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s move to digital record keeping and software-based submissions. When you register for MTD, you must use approved accounting software to keep accurate records and file directly to HMRC.
This means fewer surprises at the end of each financial quarter, clearer numbers, and less scrambling as tax deadlines approach.
Mollan & Co helps businesses in and around York make the switch to digital accounting. As experienced MTD accountants, we use modern cloud tools like Xero and take the time to tailor each setup to how you actually work.
How to register for MTD
Registering for Making Tax Digital is straightforward if you take it step by step.
Create or check your Government Gateway account: Make sure you log in using the correct business details. If you don’t already have a user ID, you can create one before you continue.
Sign up with HMRC: Go to the HMRC MTD sign up service and enrol using your VAT number or Self-Assessment information. Keep an eye on your business email as HMRC will send key updates there.
Choose MTD-compatible software and connect it: Select a recognised platform such as Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent. Once your account is set up, authorise the software to connect directly to HMRC. This ensures your submission will be sent digitally in the correct format. Note: This stage is particularly important if you are registering for MTD for VAT, as all future VAT returns must be submitted through your chosen software.
Wait for confirmation, then start filing digitally: HMRC usually confirms your registration within a few days. After that, you can file your VAT returns or income updates directly through the software, replacing the old HMRC portal.
Some businesses encounter avoidable issues when registering for MTD. We help prevent these from the start.
Cutting it too close to a VAT deadline. We plan the switch between filing periods so that your reporting is not disrupted.
Using software that is not fully enabled for MTD. We only implement compliant tools to ensure smooth submissions.
Missing agent authorisation. We make sure HMRC permissions are in place early so we can act on your behalf without delays.
Do I need to register for MTD?
These rules lay out whether you need to register for Making Tax Digital:
VAT-registered businesses are already required to follow MTD rules. If your taxable turnover is above £85,000, you must keep VAT records digitally and file your returns through MTD-compatible software.
Self-employed individuals and landlords will also need to join MTD soon. From April 2026, if your combined income from self-employment or property is more than £50,000, you must comply with MTD for Income Tax, also known as MTD ITSA.
Limited companies preparing early can benefit too, even if your turnover is currently below the threshold. Setting up MTD-compatible software now builds good habits and will save time later.
If you’re unsure which category you fall into, we can review your position and confirm what you need to do next.
