Self Assessment tax returns are typically filed annually by people whose tax is not dealt with entirely through PAYE, such as sole traders, landlords, partners in partnerships and people with other sources of untaxed income.
These personal tax returns will include information on all types of income earned in the last tax year (from April 6th to April 5th). This may include income from:
• Employment
• Self-employment
• Rental properties
• Investments
• …and more
The Self Assessment tax return will include details of any capital gains or losses incurred during the tax year, and taxpayers can also claim deductions, allowances, and any relevant tax credits or benefits – which can help significantly reduce their final tax bill.
For more information on what information you’ll typically need to complete a personal tax return, see our checklist.
For the 2025/26 tax year, paper tax returns must reach HMRC by 31 October 2026, while online returns must be submitted by 31 January 2027. Any Self Assessment tax you owe is also usually due by 31 January 2027.
If you need to complete a tax return for the 2025/26 tax year and have not sent one before, you should tell HMRC by 5 October 2026. This can also apply if you registered previously but did not need to send a return for the 2024/25 tax year.
If you miss the deadline you may have to pay penalties and interest. If you make a mistake, you may need to correct your return and HMRC may contact you for further information. The best way to avoid this is to work with a tax accountant who can ensure your taxes are filed both accurately and on time.

Whether you need to submit a Self Assessment tax return depends on your individual circumstances and sources of income.
In the UK, you must send a personal tax return if any of the following applied to you during the last tax year:
• You were self-employed as a sole trader and earned over £1,000 before taking off anything you can claim tax relief on
• You were a partner in a business partnership
• You had to pay Capital Gains Tax when you sold something that increased in value
• You were subject to the High Income Child Benefit Charge and do not pay it through PAYE
• You were an off-payroll worker who was repaying a student or postgraduate loan
You may also need to send a tax return if you have any untaxed income from other sources, including but not limited to:
• Income from renting out a property
• Tips or commission
• Income from savings, investments or dividends
• Foreign income
If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, HMRC provides a free tool to check whether you need to submit a Self Assessment Tax Return.

Filling in your tax return can be confusing and time-consuming, especially if you have several income sources or investments. Our personal accountants will take this task off your plate, so you can focus on your business.
